Red Arrows Petition
The world-famous Red Arrows have been banned from appearing at the 2012 London Olympics because they are deemed 'too British'. Organisers of the event say that the Arrows military background might be 'offensive' to other countries taking part in the Games. The display team have performed at more than 4000 events worldwide, but the Department of Culture, Media and Sport have deemed the display team 'too militaristically British.' Red Arrows pilots were said to be 'outraged', as they had hoped to put on a truly world class display for the Games, something which had never been seen before. Being axed from a British-based event for being 'too British' is an insult - the Arrows are a symbol of Britain.
The Red Arrows have been excellent ambassadors for British overseas trade, as they display their British-built Hawk aircraft all over the world.
The Arrows performed a short flypast in 2005 when the winning bid was announced, but their flypast at the Games was to have been truly spectacular. It is to be hoped that common sense prevails.
If you disagree with this decision, sign the petition on the link http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/RedArrows2012/?ref=redArrows2012

I am not convinced; there must be some truth behind the red arrow's ban from the olympic games, else why would someone have started a petition in the first place?

Re: Red Arrows Petition
Because it's the internet, and if something's posted on the internet it MUST be true. There's been more than one hoax poll before, and people take it seriously because it's human nature to believe these sort of things. And very few things have ever been banned because they're offensive, it's mostly urban legend, or things have been misinterpreted. Most people, even civil servants, are sensible, much as we'd like to beleive otherwise
Anyway, an example of this sort of thing that happenned before: There was someone who did something very similar, saying that they should change the name of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers movie, as it was obviously an attempt to cash in on the September the 11th attacks. The scary thing is how many people took it seriously, not realising it was satirical.
Anyway, this poll strikes me as the same sort of thing, an internet rumour that got out of hand. Like the atomic accelerator thing. There was never any chance of it destroying the Earth. The blackholes that would have ben created would have been microscopic and lasted for microseconds, the same as are created every day when gamma radiation from the sun hits our atmosphere.

Really? Have you ever had anyone actually get pulled up for that? and are you sure they weren't pulled up for another reason? Say, the put lights somewhere where they're not allowed to for any reason?

Local newspapers, that ever-ready source of accurate information and top-quality journalism.
The Local Newspaper in Peterborough printed a story raving about how a man in a village near where my grandparents live had been forced to take down his Union Flag and St. George's Cross flag down because 'they might offend the Pakistanis'.
He'd actually had to take them down because he didn't have the planning permission for the flagpoles.
It's like that whole Winterval nonsense- The papers went ape saying a local council had abolished Christmas...
The term had just been invented by a shop as an advertising ploy.. the council had nothing to do with it, and Christmas had never been abolished in any way, shape or form.
